John Hastings, known as RUMTUM, is an interdisciplinary artist working between Cleveland, Ohio and Denver, Colorado. Raised along the shores of Lake Erie, Hastings developed an early connection to aquatic ecosystems and natural landscapes, which continue to inform his visual and conceptual work. After earning a BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design, he lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest before settling in Denver, where the contrast between surreal environments and expansive natural terrain deepened his exploration of ecological themes.
With a background in fine art, public murals, and music, Hastings’ practice reflects a lifelong interest in ecology, architecture, and universal connections. His work often merges organic forms with geometric abstraction, drawing from architecture, mapping, and natural systems to create immersive visual worlds. These compositions reference the patterns found in landscapes, minerals, and biological forms, articulating a balance between control and spontaneity.
At the heart of his practice is a meditation on human impact and environmental continuity, expressed through layered textures, precise linework, and fluid movement. Whether through painting, installation, or sound, RUMTUM’s work invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and reimagine their relationship with nature and the spaces they move through.
